Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the benign enlargement of breast tissue in males. While breast enlargement can be temporary in newborns and teenagers, Gynecomastia may arise as an abnormal condition associated with disease, such as Klinefelter syndrome, or metabolic disorders, or as a side-effect of a medication, or as a result of the natural decrease of testosterone production in older males. In approximately 25% of cases, the cause of gynecomastia is unknown.

What is Teenage Gynecomastia?
Teenage gynecomastia is the development of male breasts in adolescent boys as young as 10, with a peak onset of 13-15 years of of age. Gynecomastia in teenagers usually goes away by the late teen years.

The excess breast tissue growth seen during puberty is a result of hormonal changes in the body affecting both androgens and estrogens. Within a period of 6 months to 2 years teenage gynecomastia should go away without any intervention. If it carries over into adulthood, it is considered true gynecomastia, and will not go away without surgical treatment. If you are overweight and suspect you have gynecomastia, it could be what is called pseudo-gynecomastia or fatty gynecomastia. This type of male breast development consists of fatty tissue, which does respond well to proper diet and exercise.

What is Bodybuilder Gynecomastia?
Bodybuilder gynecomastia represents one of the most frustrated demographics of men suffering with excess breast tissue. Bodybuilders are dedicated to perfecting their physique, spending countless hours working out and eating healthy, along with taking many supplements and other performance enhancers. Unfortunately, performance enhancers like steroids can cause hormonal fluctuations resulting in the development of excess breast tissue. Many bodybuilders think their breasts will go back to normal once they stop taking performance enhancers, but this is usually not the case.

The excess breast tissue can be localized to the area behind the areola causing the nipple to protrude. This is frequently referred to as Puffy Nipple. The tissue can also spread beyond the areola causing the breast to take on a feminine appearance. In either case, neither is acceptable to the bodybuilder who takes pride in their physical appearance.

Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia requires fat to be removed as well as breast tissue, and in cases of extreme gynecomastia in New York City it can be necessary to remove excess skin. A simple test can determine with kind the patient’s is: If they have firm fullness under the nipple, that is breast tissue, and it is appropriate to remove it. If the patient is overweight and has fullness over the whole chest, but not under the nipple, then liposuction may be a good option. Dr. Nadelson will examine you to determine the best course of action, which may even be a combination of the two above techniques. Gynecomastia surgery may be performed under both general and local anesthesia.
