Candidates for Breast Augmentation
Although the main purpose of breast augmentation is to increase breast volume and size, there are a number of additional concerns that can be addressed with the procedure, including:
- Improve symmetry between the breasts
- To correct a disproportionate figure–where the breasts are too small for the rest of the body, hips, chest, etc.
- Reposition the nipple and areola
- Restore lost volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
- To improve the subtle changes brought by aging and gravity.
- Enhance the breast shape
- Improve the fit of clothing or swimwear
- Boost self-confidence an improved self-image
In addition to exhibiting one or more of these concerns, the best candidates are typically those who are in generally good health without significant medical issues.
Breast Augmentation Procedure
Dr. Nadelson specializes in breast augmentation surgery and spent a year in a specialized cosmetic surgery fellowship to learn the “art” of aesthetic breast surgery including breast augmentation. Dr. Nadelson offers the following incision options
- Umbilical or “Belly Button” incision: a small hidden incision is made in the navel (transumbilical or TUBA)
- Peri-areolar incision: a curved incision is made at the outer border of the colored portion of the areola.
- Inframammary incision: a 3-4cm incision is made in the fold of the breast.
- Axillary incision: an incision is made in the armpit area.
The approach used depends on your unique needs and goals and will be discussed during the consultation process. Once the incision has been made in the planned area, a pocket is then created either directly under the tissue or underneath the muscle. The implant is then placed inside the pocket and the incisions are closed. A breast augmentation typically takes about one to two hours.
Throughout the entire procedure, Dr. Nadelson pays close attention to aesthetic details, including symmetry and shape, to achieve the most natural appearance.

Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with a saline (salt-water) solution. They are the most popular type of implant in use, and they are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for patients who are 18 years of age and over. Since they are filled after being inserted into the breast, saline breast implants require a smaller incision for placement. These types of implants have been used for decades and provide beautiful results.
Silicone Gel Breast Implants
Silicone gel breast implants are composed of a cohesive silicone solution encased in a silicone shell. The implants are known for their natural feel. Silicone breast implants are approved by the FDA for use in breast augmentation patients over the age of 22, and breast reconstruction patients of any age. Advances in silicone breast implants over the last several years have led to implants that are more “form-stable” and able to hold their shape for results that can provide an excellent new contour.
The implant option that is best for your goals will vary depending on your body type and your unique needs. During your consultation, Dr. Nadelson will give you a detailed overview of the procedure and listen to all your concerns so that you can make the best possible decision.
Recovery from Breast Augmentation
Following your breast augmentation surgery, medication is given to minimize pain and discomfort. You may experience soreness for the first two to three days, but this should subside to a moderate level for up to a week. Minimal bruising and swelling are normal, but they should disappear gradually over time. A day or two post-surgery, patients are typically up and around but should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity. Scars typically fade gradually, often to the point of barely being noticeable. There may be some degree of firmness and loss in nipple sensitivity immediately after the operation, but the breast usually softens and sensitivity returns.
Most women are able to return to work after four to five days, depending on their jobs. For the first four to six weeks following your surgery, there will be some exercise and lifting restrictions.
In your consultation with Dr. Nadelson, he will provide you with a price estimate that is based on factors specific to you as a patient. During your consultation, you may also wish to ask about the financing options available, which create an affordable monthly payment method with low to zero interest.
